International conference

N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Museum-flat
St.-Petersburg, 19–20 March, 2010

The two-day international conference “N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and his heritage in historical perspective” will take place in St Petersburg, at the Museum-flat of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, on March, 19–20 in 2010.

The conference is scheduled for Rimsky-Korsakov’s birthday. The word “heritage” is here interpreted in the wider sense denoting the cultural mission and creative activity of the great composer.

In the first session “Rimsky-Korsakov’s family in the musical world” we are planning to recall several half-forgotten (or even completely forgotten) names of N. Rimsky-Korsakov’s descendants, who inherited the musical genes of their father and grandfather: Nikolai‘s children Andrey, Mikhail and Vladimir, and grand-children Georgy, Liudmila and Tatiana, as well as those relatives whose musical activity enriched the life of the family: the composer’s wife Nadezhda Nikolaevna, his son-in-law Maximilian Steinberg and his daughter Nadezhda Steinberg, Nikolai’s daughter-in-law Yulia Veisberg, his grand-nephew Oleg Rimsky-Korsakov and others.

In this session, Rimsky-Korsakov’s descendants from Moscow and St.Petersburg will take part. They will share their memories of the family.

The second session “The traditions of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov in composing and teaching: followers and opponents” will be devoted to:

• Rimsky-Korsakov’s lessons (in harmony and orchestration classes);
• Ex-student-teachers in terms of the succession and development of their educational systems;
• Ex-student-composers in a dialogue with the musical heritage of their teachers.

Within the bounds of the conference we are planning to give a concert and to open an exhibition of documents and materials.

The conference’s programme committee consists of:
