Why don't you actually concentrate on the performances instead of criticising him?
That must not surprise you, my Brother.

People always need something to talk about.

Today it is Nikolai Petrov, tomorrow it is Brittneys new hair style.

Well, I know that everybody in Russia probably holds Mr Petrov as a kind of god, but he has to show some respect for the performers. He may be the president and BECAUSE he is the presidnet he is expected to at least "look" as to be paying attention and to "care" about these pianists who are putting their lifes on the line here. This competition means plenty to them. When the files are finally uploaded on the site you can go back and take a look how he spend time looking at his hands and picking his nose. In the west, that is considered very bulgar and the last time I was in Russia, at least in Moscow and SPB, it not consider "nice" to do it. He has an WORLD public image now. Not only in Russia. Thousands of people around the world are watching this competition and he has to behave to "World-standards" - Jose - How do you think that persons like Madame Nakamura fell about shaking his hand after that performance? - Respect, even if you are the president.

And as far as Brittneys hair due. You cannot possibly be serios in bringin her to this forum.

Not exactly, in fact. I wouldn't want to discuss Petrov's personality right away - there's enough said about him in the Russian part of the forum. I would just mention that there are other gods. As far as I understand at least.

По умолчанию reply to domingo196 re: fairness and sports

First of all: Thanks, domingo196, providing us with the
videos of the live performances! Many of us really appreciate this! Unfortunately I can not be online as much as I like, so my late reply to your interesting comment:
    you said:

If a pianist is good, they will raise to the top.

Hmm.... I think this is one of the common places I found, reading the overall discussion, or rather wishful thinking. Quite a few things must come together to make it to the 'top'. (Another question would be to define what that 'top' is)

That USED to be the rule. Winner of a competition or not. Now, is all more complicated, and its all about marketing. Look at LANG LANG (I think that is his name) terrific marketing for a good, solid player, but not for a "out of this world" pianist. Volodos has not the same marketing machine with him, but is much better (limited repertoire, in my opinion)

If you allow: that has never been the rule! Maybe one could consider that it was perhaps a bit easier to be recognized when you had talent, because you had not to deal with a globalized market. You just name two examples yourself: LANG LANG and VOLODOS. I do not want to compare them, they are both enormously talented. You may regret that Lang Lang is more successful (commercially) than Volodos. So, you see yourself that in times of a global market the music industry needs more reasons to push a player to the peaks of fame than only the talent. Advertisement is very expensive. Chinese market is apparently important now. Still, Volodos enjoys a great career, he has concerts, and makes a living of it, he can and will hopefully be able to go for his artistic goals, which is even more important.

    - I think it is WORTH to spend the time and money on competitiions. Yes. They will showcase their talent to an audiencce who (in my opinion) still knows what they are talking about before they have to go and play to audiences who are merely mediocre and who cannot tell the difference betwen the good and the great.

    I am very sorry:
    1. it is perhaps worth to spend the money, but you should HAVE enough of that money, otherwise you face (not always, but in most cases) big obstacles, especially nowdays, or you have parents like those of Lang Lang, who (for some reason) decide to invest their whole existence to make a success possible. But we only hear about Lang Lang. There are many such parents from rather not too wealthy families, who were not so lucky.
    2. It is rather a pity, that you would make a difference between an expert public and those which are 'mediocre', as you say. Who really can for sure tell the difference between 'good' and 'great'?

Hannover still a terrific place for pianist, but not the only one.

Well, I did not criticize Hannover. I mentioned it as an example for the way people are making a choice of teacher, a way of strategic thinking. If you want to make a competition and be successful, then go to those places where the competition animals are.
I did not criticize those who proceed this way, it is their choice and it is the way part of the competition-mechanism works.

Yes and not. A live performance from a well prepared performer will mot probably be a good performance.

Yes, a well prepared musician will in most cases play very well. Still, one never knows. Especially there are things which can not be planned ahead (and should not (!) because they would be fake): the emotions. One can not know how inspiredly one will play on a given moment.

We DO NOT want stop watches to measure "anything" to that degree of precision. Music making is not a precise science. In China perhaps, you can train 10000 pianists to play at the same time. But THANK GOD that there are personalities, heart and love for music
    .

Hmm.... of course not. It is no science. And this is the reason why we can have endless discussions and thousands of opinions. Wonderful! No need always to agree! Otherwise we would not have those discussions in a forum like this one. Would not be fun here if we all shared the same opinions all the time, right?

Concerning your little hint about Chinas 10000 pianists: You do not seriously think that a country (dis)qualifies by such kind of events, like having a few hundred pianists play some Blue Rhapsodies in an Olympic Stadion? Many countries have such DADA-events! However, in most places people like to express themselves individually, also in China.

'Hearts and minds' .... Sure, I suppose everybody has.

    Best Greetings

Jose, I might be able to help with the file-splitting. The problem is that I primarily work with WMV formats and I'm not sure whether I can actually output something in AVI or ASF, if that's all right by you.

    Thanks for doing this.
